September 2026 Newsletter

Dear Neighbour,

Over the summer months I’ve had the pleasure of attending dozens and dozens of community events. Each is an opportunity for me to hear directly from you on the issues that are important to you, your family, our community, and our country. Without a doubt, several remain top of mind for residents:

Resolution with the United States

I’ve heard anger, fear, frustration, and everything in between, but ultimately Canadians are pragmatic and there is desire for a respectful resolution that benefits both countries.

Affordability and housing

Everything still costs more, especially housing, and wages haven’t kept up. That means families in our community are still struggling to get by, and young Canadians remain locked out of housing and are understandably frustrated about it.

The economy

Canada’s current economic malaise goes deeper than just our recent trade-related problems. Slow growth and declining purchasing power, compared to our peer nations, means Canadians are getting poorer. We must unlock our competitive advantage in Canada, including green-lighting the hundreds of projects awaiting federal permits, repealing anti-development laws so that our natural resources can get to market, and reforming our tax laws.

As Parliament resumes, these are issues that will continue to be my focus.

Protecting Lake Simcoe

A conversation with the “Lake Doctor”

Lake Simcoe and Lake Scugog are beautiful parts of our community’s natural heritage. The lakes support local and regional ecosystems, tourism, and agriculture, and supply drinking water to thousands of people. This summer, I had the opportunity to get on Lake Simcoe with Dr. Brian Ginn, limnologist and official “Lake Doctor” at the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, for an in-depth update on the health of our lake.

Monitoring

Evaluating the lake’s health requires looking beyond single metrics like phosphorus loads. Researchers continuously track water temperatures, dissolved oxygen levels, and biological communities to gauge overall ecological stability.

Managing invasive species

Invasive species, particularly water soldier, quagga mussels and starry stonewort, remain top ecological challenges. Ongoing research and targeted prevention strategies are essential to keeping populations contained. Dr. Ginn is doing cutting-edge work looking at the decline of zebra mussels, the concurrent increase in quagga mussels, and the latter’s surprising effect on phosphorus levels.
